Melania Trump has been mocked on social media after she credited a “balanced diet, fresh air, and vitamins” for her Covid-19 recovery.

The first lady says she preferred “a more natural route” to recovery rather than the cocktail of drugs taken by the president during his treatment for coronavirus.

Ms Trump said that she had now tested negative for coronavirus.

She also confirmed that the couple’s son, Barron Trump, had tested positive for coronavirus without symptoms and had now also tested negative.

Twitter users were quick to criticise Ms Trump for her claims and for not promoting masks or social distancing.

“Mentions only fresh air and vitamins. Masks, physical distancing, even thorough hand washing with soap and water NOT MENTIONED,” tweeted @swmstn2.

“What a piece of work. Many vulnerable high risk Americans are food insecure right now, can’t afford vitamins and can’t take a nice stroll in the fresh air to ‘prevent Covid’,” wrote @Clockwood0317.

“Also a PSA: Fresh air and vitamins do not PREVENT or CURE a deadly virus,” wrote @NickPonticello.

Ms Trump, 50, did not got to hospital with Donald Trump and remained at the White House where she says she suffered from “body aches, a cough and headaches”.

Mr Trump, 74, was treated with a dose of the experimental antibodies drug from Regeneron before returning to the White House after three days at Walter Reed.

“I chose to go a more natural route in terms of medicine, opting more for vitamins and healthy food,” said Ms Trump in a statement published by the White House.

“We had wonderful caretakers around us and we will be forever grateful for the medical care and professional discretion we received from Dr Conley and his team.

“It was an unfamiliar feeling for me to be the patient instead of a person trying to encourage our nation to stay healthy and safe.

“I encourage everyone to continue to live the healthiest life they can. A balanced diet, fresh air, and vitamins really are vital to keep our bodies healthy,” she added.

“ For your complete well-being, compassion and humility are just as important in keeping our minds strong.

“For me personally, the most impactful part of my recovery was the opportunity to reflect on many things—family, friendships, my work, and staying true to who you are.”

More than 215,000 Americans have now died from the coronavirus, and nearly eight million have been infected.
